1- Chindi - culture:Navajo
Chindi is the spirit or the Ghost that is left behind when a person dies according to the beliefs of the Navajo people from south western US. The Chindi spirit contains everything that was bad or evil about that particular individual. If the Chindi makes contact with a another person that person can contract ‘Ghost sickness’ and which can be terminal and lead to death. The Chindi linger around the possessions of the recently deceased person. For this reason and out of fear of contracting ‘Ghost sickness’ the Navajo people often burry or destroy the possessions of the recently deceased person. Also the Navajo people would allow death to happen outdoors so that the Chindi spirit would be able to naturally disperse. If a person dies in a house that only belonged to that person the house will become haunted with the Chindi.
There was a recent case of the Chindi that was reported in the magazine Frontier Times in 1967. Te article spoke of an encounter with the Chindi in 1925. John R. Winslowe met a slender teenage girl called Alice Long Salt. She said that her family was cursed because over 100 years ago, two of her family members deceived a blind medicine man. The medicine man cursed the Long Salts family with a Chindi spirit. The Chindi gave Ghost sickness to various members of the family. Alice’s father was stricken ill, became weak and died of illness. Alice’s two uncles became crippled and weak and eventually died as well. Later in 1928, Alice Long Salt was found dead 3 miles from the trading post of Red Mesa.
